George Washington, Who owned the first mule in the United States, heard that Spain had a great farm animal and contacted the US Ambassador. In 1785, Spain's King Charles III learned of the inquiry, he sent General Washington a jack as a gift. Washington bred one of his finest mares and the jack which produced a mule which was named "Compromise."
